Awakening Valley Sangha is a Buddhist meditation group in Provo, Utah. I help out in many ways but one specific way was creating flyers, pamphlets, song sheets, and signage for the 2025 retreat. Especially since silence was a major theme of the retreat, it was important to have signs and schedules printed to prevent major confusion.
I used Adobe InDesign to create all of these. It was helpful to handle complicated layouts in the tri-fold and many pages for signs.
The biggest piece was creating a tri-fold pamphlet with all of the information someone might want during the retreat. It had to include the schedule and other useful bits of information to help smoothly navigate through a mediation retreat.
In addition to the pamphlet we wanted to include songs. The songs help keep a light spirit and most of them are about meditation as well. Finding the exact font size and column count to cram them on as legible as possible was surprisingly tricky.
Since the lodge was big and maze-like, we needed signs and maps to help people navigate the space. We also named the dorms and a few common areas to reduce confusion and add an element of fun to the space.
A simple task was creating flyers leading up to the retreat to post on the bulletin board. They were neat, elegant, and included vital information so people could plan accordingly.
